Susana Millman became known as a photographer of the Grateful Dead and other musicians, and has gone on to specialize in dance (the Mark Morris Dance Group), travel, art, and restaurant interiors, as well as event and convention photography.
She was born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, attended Cornell and Columbia, and traveled extensively in South America before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her more recent travels have included Asia (India, the Silk Route in Western China and Pakistan) and East Africa.
She has contributed significantly to a number of books, including the authorized biography of the Grateful Dead, "A Long Strange Trip," "Grateful Dead:: The Illustrated Trip" and "L'Allegro, Il Penseroso y Il Moderato" the definitive study of the Mark Morris work of that name.
She is married to writer and historian Dennis McNally and lives in San Francisco, where she is an activist on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union and other progressive causes.
Photographic thoughts and philosophy
In photographing entertainment, art, and dance, the transcendent moments for me are when I become one with the subject matter of the photos and my rhythm of shooting entrains with the rhythm of the piece.
My best work of documentation occurs when I share the creative energy of the subject and my photographs provide an evocative memory of the experience.
As a location photographer, no matter what the subject matter, my goal is not to provide an image of formal perfection but rather to capture what Cartier-Bresson called the decisive moment.
My photographic heroes are Robert Frank, Sebastian Salgado, William Eggleston, and Andres Gursky. |
